What is TDI?
Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) describes the diesel engine technology created and used
by the Volkswagen Group, which includes Audi. TDI engines are superior to conventional diesels
in many ways:
Direct Injection. Fuel injectors spray fuel directly into each cylinder's combustion chamber,
rather than typical pre-combusion chamgers.
Forced Induction. A turbocharger increases the volume of air pushed into the cylinders, while
an intercooler lowers the temperature of this air, thus lowering the density, which allows even more
air and fuel to be injected and combusted.
Reduced Material Volume. By decreasing the size of the engine without decreasing power, the overall
efficiency is increased.
What are the Benefits of TDI?
Power. TDI engines produce immense torque, which means power is available even at low RPMs.
Economy. Unlike hybrids, TDI engines are ultra-efficient in both city and highway driving situations.
Reliability. With fewer moving parts, no high-tension electrical system, and no predetonation pressure,
diesels generally last twice as long as similar petrol engines.
How is TDI Used Today?
As U.S. automobile enthusiasts seek to lower fuel costs and reduce emissions, while improving
performance and reliability, they realize diesel engine technology is a viable option. More than 50%
of the vehicles sold in Europe each year are diesel powered, and, as more diesel models are introduced
in the U.S., the percentage is sure to increase here as well.
Many motorists understand diesel's outstanding fuel economy. Indeed, a fully equipped VW Jetta
TDI is EPA rated for 30mpg city and 42mpg highway. Diesel technology is especially attractive to those
looking for an adult-sized SUV with plenty of power and towing capacity, yet class-leading fuel economy.
The VW Touareg TDI is rated for 18mpg city/25mpg highway, yet can tow 7700+ pounds (properly equipped,
of course).
Buyers may qualify for the federal government's Advanced Lean Burn Technology Motor Vehicle tax credit,
which, for example, is up to $1300 on the aforementioned Jetta TDI. As with every government program,
there are rules and restrictions, so please see IRS.gov
for details.
TDI isn't just about economy, though. Motorsports fans already know about Audi's might R10 V12 TDI, which
has revolutionized sportscar racing with its mindboggling torque, bullet-proof reliability, and
pit-stop-minimizing fuel economy. Learn more about the R10 V12 TDI

How Is Ryland's Involved With TDI?
Even with its long history, diesel technology is still relatively new to many independent shops and
even dealers. Ryland's has the expertise, experience, and equipment required to service and maintain
your diesel, especially your TDI.
Ryland's can help normal drivers with their diesel issues, "hyper-milers" maximize their fuel economy,
and performance enthusiasts get the most from their vehicles.
